Sculptures - painted street lamps

Hanson and Sonnenberg have made three sculptures using street lamps doing some particularly “human” things. Got Drunk, Fell Down presents a fallen light standard, as a second lamp looks on with concern. Fountain illustrates a biological need not frequently associated with keeping our streets illuminated after dark.

The work of Hanson and Sonnenberg is often hauntingly humorous and regularly transforms familiar objects in unusual ways. Central to the artists’ collaborative process is a sense of “agreement” which frequently begins with the presentation of a situation that the artists’ hope a spectator may be sympathetic with.

Chris Hanson and Hendrika Sonnenberg met at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (Halifax) in 1982. Their collaboration has brought them international critical acclaim. They presently reside in Brooklyn, New York with their cat Lucy.
