The Red Carpet

Apollonia Vanova - Toronto, Canada and Slovakia

Sculpture

A carpet created out of electroluminescent wire, acquires a different meaning through the contrast of a contemporary medium with the traditional practice of weaving. It is no longer an object to be walked on, but an art object to behold.

Exhibited in a dark hotel room, the illuminated carpet becomes a compelling work of art as it seduces the viewer to approach; yet at the same time, through the use of unconventional materials, it brings the viewer to a halt!

Apollonia Vanova is fascinated by the exploration of language, myth, dreams, instincts, objects of desire, and the meaning of symbols in our culture.

Born in Slovakia, Apollonia Vanova emigrated to Canada and graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC.
