Jennifer Walshe - Dublin, Ireland

Performance Art

THE SIGNING is a street spectacle shadow opera created simply with a sound system and a hanging projection scrim. The conceptual narrative revolves around the dramatic tension, both psychological and social, enacted in the signing of a document such as a loan form, a divorce, a recruitment form or a contract. The project is a collaboration from experimental film, video, sound, installation and Performance Art cult figure Tony Conrad and renowned Irish composer and performer Jennifer Walshe. Throughout the night, they perform using shadow puppetry, voice, violin, electronics and projections. THE SIGNING transforms Nathan Phillips Square into a vortex of sound, image, energy and movement to be experienced by spectators wandering through the shifting tableaux.

Tony Conrad has worked in media art, performance and music for fifty years. He has shown and performed at the Venice Biennale (Italy), Albright-Knox Gallery (Buffalo), Greene Naftali Gallery (New York) and elsewhere. He teaches at the University of Buffalo.

“The most original compositional voice to emerge from Ireland in the past 20 years” (The Irish Times), composer and performer Jennifer Walshe was born in Dublin, Ireland. Her music has been commissioned, broadcast and performed all over the world.
