Another Protest Song: Karaoke with a Message, 2008/2011

Performance

Another Protest Song (APS): Karaoke with a Message looks to the karaoke songbook as potential for political enunciation through song. Music, politically motivated or re-contextualized as such, will take centre stage as participants sing along to the APS: Karaoke with a Message songbook. In the era of competitive singing and innumerable karaoke bars, the choice of a song speaks a lot about the performer, particularly if that song includes critical content. In the context of protest karaoke, the song choice may communicate history in the present, and potentially defines certain music as politically viable rather than consumed primarily as popular culture. MCs for the night include Keith Cole & Alexis O'Hara.

Nevarez & Tevere's projects investigate contemporary music, dissent and dissonance in the public forum. Their work moves between the spatial simultaneity of performance, discussion and enunciation, reflecting upon the projection of political agency through transmission and song. Their interests lie in the formation of mobile, performance-based, social spaces, along with the re-articulation of radio within such locales. Their projects have been staged internationally including for Manifesta 8, The New Museum, and Creative Time.
