View full project description

A major auditorium at the TIFF Bell Lightbox is transformed into a giant recursive mirror featuring an entirely original score by a collection of award-winning musicians.

Audience members trickle into the theatre, where they initially watch themselves sit down in real time on the big screen as though in front of a giant mirror. The ambient noise they create—shuffling, coughs and conversation—is all captured, while the audience’s movement and location in the theatre triggers subtle musical elements.

Audio and video is played back, layered over ongoing real-time activities onscreen as people continue to enter and exit the theatre, accompanied by the first elements of a larger melody composed by the musicians.

Additional loops of audio, video and music are continually recorded and played back at regular intervals.
