Olafur Eliasson - Copenhagen, Denmark

Light Installation

Hanging in a doorway, a curtain of rotating acrylic glass prisms is illuminated from behind by a beam of light. Clusters of rainbow-coloured strips, produced as the prisms refract the beam of light, scan the space, embracing walls, ceiling and floor. White light shines through the gaps between the prisms, appearing on the room’s walls in sharply defined stripes, a contrast to the rippled edges of the chromatic bands. A large mirror that sits adjacent to the curtain of prisms creates a second set of reflections.

Olafur Eliasson’s art explores questions of perception, embodied experience and feelings of self. Eliasson strives to make the concerns of art relevant to society at large. The artist’s diverse works in sculpture, painting, photography and film have been exhibited throughout the world, not limited to the confines of the museum and gallery.
