Alfredo Jaar - Santiago, Chile

Sound Installation

Music (Everything I know I learned the day my son was born) explores the drama of being born to die, or to arrive to this world in a continuing cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

Previously this project was more socially and politically motivated, but for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche the artist is exploring this project through a lens of time.

The first cries of babies born in Toronto in 2015, between 7 pm and 7 am will be captured and played during the event at the exact time of their actual birth.

Alfredo Jaar was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1956. His multidisciplinary artistic practice explores the unequal power relations and sociopolitical divisions that result from globalization. Jaar has had solo exhibitions at major museums around the world and his work was included in the Venice Biennale (1986, 2007, 2009 and 2013, the last time as Chile’s representative); as well as São Paulo, Istanbul and Gwangju Biennials. Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985 and MacArthur Fellowship in 2000, Jaar lives and works in New York.
