AMAZE, 2014

Marcos Zotes - Reykjavik, Iceland

Installation

AMAZE transforms an ordinary scaffolding structure into a fully immersive environment of light and sound in the heart of the city. A labyrinth like no other, AMAZE provides a multisensory experience through a personal journey of discovery, transformation and challenge.

The idea of the labyrinth is predicated in the notion of finding oneself through the notion of getting lost. Its complex branching passages force visitors to choose among options, some of which may be dead ends while others double back on themselves, as they complete their spiritual journey across the dynamically lit structure.

The ephemeral architecture of AMAZE consists of a standard scaffolding structure covered by multiple layers of fabric, providing the canvas for a spectacular audiovisual experience. While walking inside AMAZE, visitors are constantly able to experience the surrounding city, transforming the journey into a playful community experience that is strongly connected to its urban context.

AMAZE encourages the active participation of city dwellers in order to breathe new life into places that have become stagnant or empty.

Marcos Zotes (1977) is an architect and artist based in Iceland. He is the Director of UNSTABLE, a multidisciplinary design studio that explores the social and political aspects of architecture in relation to the urban context. His work has been exhibited in multiple museums, galleries and public spaces across Europe and the US.
