Pine Cone Colony
Floyd G. Elzinga - Beamsville, Canada
Sculpture
Pine Cone Colony is a night-long, performance-style feeding of a fire colonizing the house and park of the historic Campbell House with Floyd Elzinga's pine cone sculptures. The viewing of this contemporary art piece in a historic setting highlights the contrasting values of modern urban and idyllic rustic. Three giant steel pine cones, weighing up to 400 lbs, will be positioned on the grounds outside. Inside the 1822 building, there will be smaller steel pine cones in unexpected situations, and other metal works hung in the ballroom. The installation includes a dramatic "fire cone" in the central flower bed – the first time Elzinga has used fire in his art. The feeding of a fire within this sculptural rendering of a common seed pod evokes thoughts about the relationship of nature and our industrialized world.
