Film Projection with live performance

Building on the success of previous Nuit Blanche programmes where audiences have been dazzled by the art of silent cinema and its improvised musical scores, this year's TIFF Cinematheque programme will return us to the origins of cinema. Since its birth in 1895 (the date in which an audience first assembled and paid to watch a screening -a very short one!), the cinema has split into two strands: the realist mode associated with the Lumière brothers, and fiction, which evolved from the innovative story-telling of Georges Méliès. One section will be comprised of the early Lumière documentaries, iconic works such as Workers Leaving the Factory and The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, while the other will focus on the art of mise-en-scène developed by Méliès and his love of magic.
