Installation
THE END IS NEAR HERE IS NEAR THE END is an ambitious new installation by Canadian visual artists Jason de Haan and Scott Rogers. By co-opting the familiar fatalist phrase "The End is Near" the artists wryly explore notions of apocalypse, suggesting that doomsday is not so much imminent as it is perpetually displaced in the vastness of the universe.
The lettering of the text (which is painted with glow-in-the-dark pigment) is illuminated by timed lights every fifteen minutes, thus creating a sequence in which the letters glow independently and slowly fade into darkness, only to be lit once again in a constant cycle. For viewers congregated in the parking lot below, the piece will promote a sense of calm reflection as they stare up into the sky beyond. This experience is both positive and enigmatic. Are we a part of some strange, utopian science fiction narrative or simply witnesses to the constant unfolding of the world on its path through infinite space?
Jason de Haan and Scott Rogers are Canadian visual artists based in Alberta. They have shown their individual work extensively in Canada and internationally, including recent exhibitions in Iceland and Mexico (de Haan) and Minneapolis and Halifax (Rogers). As collaborators, this is their first installation project undertaken together.
