Rose Bond - Portland, USA

Animation-Video Installation

Activating the public space at the corner of Yonge Street and Shuter Street, Rose Bond’s Intra Muros delivers a personal and voyeuristic glimpse into an artist’s struggle with creative malaise. Opening with a representational illusion of a studio flat and playing off the voyeurism we experience in glimpsed windows on twilight walks, Intra Muros begins quietly with a series of gestured vignettes a call that didn’t come, a foggy idea that is lost on walking to the next room and an obsession with vacuuming.  The artist visually samples from experimental film giants Norman McLaren and Len Lye as well as her own work and includes Judith Gruber-Stitzer’s original soundtrack that ranges from contemplative to cacophonous echoing the sounds of an urban street. The work takes on a frivolity and joie de vivre of its own as the 9-minute work loops continuously in 12 windows.  In the end, with the semblance of order seemingly restored the character pauses in exit casting a backward glance, the door closes and, like a never-ending cycle, the process begins again. The animated "movies" are rear-projected to create a viewing experience that insinuates the building, architecture and surrounding environment, resulting in a distinctly different physicality than projections on a façade.

Animator and media artist Rose Bond is a professor in Animated Arts at the Pacific Northwest College of Art.  She has been honoured with numerous awards and fellowships from agencies such as the American Film Institute and National Endowment for the Arts. Her installations include Broadsided! at Exeter Castle in England and Gates of Light at the Museum at Eldridge Street in New York.  Intra Muros was projected at the 2007 Platform Festival and reprised in the Utrecht City Hall during the Holland Animation Film Festival in 2008.
