Up Up and Around: Toronto City Hall, 2010
Christian Giroux - Guelph, Canada
Daniel Young - Toronto, Canada
Film Installation
This 35-mm film explores Toronto's iconic City Hall. Designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell and opened in 1965, the architecture stands out for its mid-century futuristic vision. Its two curved towers shape and define an internal volume: the white dome of council chambers. Using the windows that line the two arched towers as framing devices, the artists trace a spiraling arc through the building’s skeleton, deploying the architecture itself as the mechanism to generate the work. New knowledge is revealed about a place that is otherwise familiar to our experience, offering an inside view of a building we mostly see from the outside.
