Yonge-Dundas Square
(SE corner of Yonge Street and Dundas Street East)
Just because you can feel it doesn’t mean it’s there, 2010
Ryan Gander - London, UK
Fire, cartoon strip printed in a national newspaper
At Yonge-Dundas Square, an intentional fire is lit. The possible explanations for it are numerous and remote from one another. Some clues are offered through a printed cartoon that enjoys a life independent from the lived experience. The fire burns from sundown to sun up. The public square becomes the stage for an event of ambiguous designation but of unmistakable scale and presence. But, as the artist puts it: just because you can feel it, doesn’t mean it’s there.
